M8share's story

Denton, our founder, shares his story...

I was standing in my living room, looking out the window, when I noticed how many gardens weren't being used in my block of flats. Living on the second floor, I didn't have access to a garden unlike my neighbours living on the ground floor. So, most summers all I could do is sit and gaze out the window at all the gardens that weren't being used. As you know, when it's summertime all you want to do is relax in the garden, whether chilling and watching the day go by whilst soaking up the sun or having friends and family over for a BBQ. That's when the idea came to me! I thought, "Why are we not sharing our unused spaces with each other? This is something that should have happened a long time ago." I figured that some of my neighbours might be thinking the same thing, so I decided to come up with a plan!

Next, I thought it couldn't just be gardens that are not being used. I started to think about spaces inside the home too, such as lofts, basements and spare rooms. The amount of empty spaces inside and outside the home is ubiquitous and people could be profiting from them. At the same time, someone like myself, living in a block of flats, would highly appreciate renting someone's unused garden. "This is a no-brainer," I thought, because everyone is benefiting. It's not just people you don't know that you could be sharing your empty space with, it could even be your mate, your next-door neighbour, a family member or someone that you might see in your local community.

Fulham, the area that I live in, is a vibrant part of London rich in diversity, with people from lots of different cultures including the Caribbean, Middle East and Australia, just to name a few. All living side by side and at times I feel like there are mini-communities within the community. For instance, I might walk past a local coffee shop, restaurant or street market and notice that some parts of the community would occupy a certain space or a particular corner of the High Street. I considered that some people must have hidden spaces, no matter how big or small, that could also benefit them financially.

I was inspired to make a positive impact and create an online platform where everyone could connect, share and communicate with each other and, overall, help them to earn money from their unused space.
